DAY 22: Road trip

I woke up without Triin beside me. Ugh, what time is it? It’s 8AM and the girls might head to the beach right away to enjoy the little time we have left. They didn’t even bother to wake me up?! I head to the beach and I saw them taking pictures… yet again. We really have not much time to swim or even try the Banana boat because we have more scheduled for later and we’re travelling far. After a few more shots, we decided to eat our breakfast so we could get ready afterwards. I really wish we could stay a little longer and appreciate the place at daytime, but at least I had the chance to be here and enjoy the beach. After getting ready, we rode the van and head home. On our way, we stop over to places with nice view and take a picture for a while. The lake can be seen from the road clearly so we go down once in a while to take a picture of it. I fell asleep on the way because I was so tired – I went to bed in the morning and woke up at 8 AM so, what do you expect? They woke us up when we got to where we’re supposed to be. THRIFT SHOPS! It’s like a market lane but it’s full of stuff we can buy for souvenirs. We got very excited and immediately run to the stores to check shirts, bags, or anything we can give our loved ones back home. Miss Yayuk couldn’t stop us so she told us that they’ll be at that one eatery to eat lunch and that we better go there after we shop. We went from one shop to another and bargained as if our life depended on it. Arvin is being accompanied by Gita, Miel is nowhere to be found, while us girls went together. “Berapa harganya?” – oh, how it comes in handy to know “how much is this?” in Bahasa. Gita taught us well. Some of them can’t speak much English so we only communicate by words, not in sentences. I happen to know numbers in Bahasa so when the girls are asking for the price and I’m on the other store, they just shout “BRITNEY, COME HERE! I DON’T UNDERSTAND HER.” Hmm, maybe I’m meant to be in Indonesia after all? Of course, our bargain queen, Angel, does what she does best; and I bargain for Triin. At the first stop, I got 6 bags, 10 ballpens, 3 ashtrays and a handcrafted house. Miss Yayuk and Sir Adam are literally pulling us out on the store because we really need to leave. We insist to stay because they’re not done buying yet. So, for our next stop, MORE THRIFT SHOPS. This, I think, is better than the first one because there’s MUCH stuff to choose from and since this is a lane of stores, the price is cheaper and you can still bargain! At this moment, Angel has no more money so the title “bargain queen” is pass onto me for the meantime. I bargained Triin her pants from 120,000 rupiah, to 60,000 rupiah real quick! It just took a little charm, haha! We went around a lot and after we’re done buying gifts, we watched this traditional dance just across the market. After watching, we tried to dance as well… hashtag do it for the blog! Plus, we really promised ourselves to maximize our experience here in Indonesia. Before starting, we have to wear the costume. It’s not much, just a little for the head and one to hang on one of your shoulders. Guys get to wear a triangular headdress, while us, girls, wear something like a head band, only for the forehead. Okay, sorry, I don’t know what it’s called! We dance for more or less 10 minutes and we have to place money in the statues hand. The dance mostly involves walking around and just moving your hands. It’s not really tiring, but it’s panas (“hot” in Bahasa). Overall, I’m glad we tried it. Miss Yayuk said we’re going on a “boat” and we have to wait until 4:30 PM since that’s the time the boat is scheduled to arrive. Before heading on to lunch, we stopped by somewhere with a very nice view of the sea, or ocean, or lake, whatever. So, usual routine – I got excited, takes out my phone and monopod, took a video and snaps everything! Miel, our photographer (just kidding), took out the camera and takes a picture of us! It’s very windy so it’s nice to just sit and enjoy the view. I can’t get enough of it; phones and cameras don’t really give much justice to its natural beauty. So I stared at it and remembered how it looked through my eyes; if I could just take photos using my eyes. I’m out of words, it was just picturesque. After we’re done, we head on to eat our lunch. We ate at an eatery in front of the dock so we can proceed there right after we eat. Turns out we’re riding our van in a ship to get to the other side! This is my first time to actually ride something on water. In the Philippines, we call it RoRo (roll in, roll out). You roll your vehicle in the ship, and roll out. It was an hour and a half ride, and it’s totally fine because the view is remarkable! Actually, you could see the dock where you’re from to the other side; it’s really not that far but you’re travelling on water, so… yup. When we’re about to reach the other side, we need to get back to the van already because the vehicles downstairs are lined up; we have to go immediately. On the road, we passed on the part where monkeys are on the side of the street. People passing by throw them food and they’re just waiting there. They’re so cute, mostly small ones! We stopped to feed on cute little monkey by the bridge, but it ran away and suddenly a BIG MONKEY went up! We freaked out and Ma’am Yayuk immediately closed the window. It was so funny how it took us all by surprise. We calmed down for a moment and then feed him instead. We, then, moved forward and continued to our trip. Most of us are asleep, we barely had a complete sleep trying to make the most of the day. We can recover the hours of sleep we lost, but the time for us to experience and enjoy our stay? We can never bring it back. So most parts of the trip, we slept and energize, but somehow, we kind of wake up at the same time and jive altogether. Sir Adam is playing songs on his phone through YouTube and asked us if we have any song requests. So, we suggested funny tagalong songs and sang it altogether. We want Gita and the others relate to so we requested old English songs we all know and sang it. We even sang every song from Justin Beiber’s My World album. It’s so fun and before we know we arrived at our next stop. Dinner time! We stopped by for a few moments we head back to the road. I was so full so went back to sleep, we all did. The next thing we know, everyone’s waking us up because we already have arrived. We arrived home at almost midnight I guess. It was very tiring, but we had so much fun! But tomorrow, we have to go back to our real world and teach.
